While most major symphony orchestras live with worries over declining revenues and aging subscribers, the New York Philharmonic was in a state of heightened anxiety after 9/11. The search for a new music director had been awkward, the new season was hastily cobbled together, but by re-presenting the orchestra in a defiantly vibrant manner—carried though in advertising, brochures, posters and mailings—proved dramatically effective.
